Amidah - The Standing Prayer – Shemoneh 'Esreh
Eighteen Benedictions

In the 5th century B.C.E., the 120 men of the Great Assembly composed the basic text of the Amidah. The text was codified after the destruction of the Second Temple, 70 AD. In his commentary on Psalm 29 in the Ketuvim, Rabbi Solomon ben Isaac (Yitzhaki) states, the eighteen uses of His name (יְהֹוָה Yehōvâ) are the basis of the shemoneh esreh the eighteen benedictions. The Amidah was expanded from eighteen to nineteen blessings in the 2nd century C.E., under the leadership of Rabbi Gamliel the Elder in Yavneh (Rabbi Hayim Donin).

The prayer Jesus taught his disciples, The Lord’s Prayer, is most likely an abbreviated version of the Amidah. Rabbi Eliezer, a younger contemporary of Jesus, taught this abbreviation of the Eighteen: May your will be done in heaven above, grant peace of mind to those who fear you [on earth] below, and do what seems best to you. Blessed are you, O LORD, who answers prayer.

A traditional guide to praying the Amidah (standing):

  1. Pray standing (Nehemiah 9:2).
  2. Pray facing Jerusalem (1 Kings 8:30, 44, 48-49; Psalm 5:7; Daniel 6:10).
  3. Pray with your feet together (Ezekiel 1:7).
  4. Pray with a quiet spirit like Hannah who whispered her prayer (1 Samuel 1:12-13; Matthew 6:5-8).

Psalm 29 NASB

The Voice of the Lord in the Storm

A Psalm of David

1 Ascribe to the Lord, sons of the mighty,
Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name;
Worship the Lord in holy attire.

3 The voice of the Lord is on the waters;
The God of glory thunders,
The Lord is over many waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful,
The voice of the Lord is majestic.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
Yes, the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon in pieces.
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
And Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord divides flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
The Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth
And strips the forests bare;
And in His temple everything says, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sat as King at the flood;
Yes, the Lord sits as King forever.
11 The Lord will give strength to His people;
The Lord will bless His people with peace.

The Prayer of St. Patrick of Ireland (fifth century)

I arise today

Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.

I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

I arise today
Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In the prayers of patriarchs,
In preachings of the apostles,
In faiths of confessors,
In innocence of virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me;
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's hosts to save me
From snares of the devil,
From temptations of vices,
From every one who desires me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a multitude.
I

summon today all these powers between me and evil,
Against every cruel merciless power that opposes my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom,
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of women and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul.
Christ shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that reward may come to me in abundance.
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through a confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.
