ASH WEDNESDAY AND LENT (a call to holiness).
Lent is from February 14 to March 28, and during this time Christ Church is called to reflect on faith, repentance, holiness, and what it means to live a life pleasing to God. The word Lent is from the Old English word lencten meaning springtime or spring. The term refers to the 40 day season of fasting and repentance in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.
Matthew 16:24-25, “24 Then Jesus said to His
disciples,
“If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny
himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever
wants to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for
My sake will find it.”
Titus 2:11-14, “11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously, and in a godly manner in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, eager for good deeds.”
